Our Core Services & Functions

The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) of Malawi is a statutory body established under the National Construction Industry Act of 1996. Its primary mandate is to regulate, develop, and promote the construction industry in Malawi, ensuring quality, safety, and professionalism across all stakeholders in the construction industry.

Our services and functions can be broken down into:-

Regulation and Compliance

  • Registration & Licensing: NCIC registers and licenses contractors, consultants, material manufacturers, and suppliers. Only certified entities are permitted to operate in Malawi’s construction sector.
  • Monitoring & Enforcement: The Council monitors construction activities to ensure adherence to established standards and codes. It has the authority to issue stop orders on non-compliant projects and impose disciplinary actions on violators.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Professional Development: NCIC offers various training programs, including courses on health and safety, site management, AutoCAD, and tender estimation.
  • Academic Partnerships: In partnership with the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), NCIC has introduced a diploma in construction management to address skill gaps in the industry.

Standards Development

  • Code and Policy Formulation: In collaboration with the Malawi Bureau of Standards, NCIC develops and promotes construction standards, such as the Code of Practice as well as the Malawi Infrastructure Delivery Management Standards (MIDMS).

Project Oversight

  • Project Registration: All construction projects must be registered with NCIC, enabling the Council to monitor and ensure compliance with industry standards.
  • Technical Audits: NCIC conducts technical audits to assess project quality and adherence to specifications.

Policy and Industry Development

  • Advisory Role: The Council advises the government on policies to foster industry growth and enhance professionalism.
  • Research and Innovation: NCIC promotes research into local construction materials and methods to improve sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Conferences and Exhibitions: NCIC organizes events like the International Construction Conference to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among industry stakeholders.
  • Community Initiatives: The Council engages in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities such as tree planting, career guidance for the youth and educational outreach to promote environmental sustainability and industry awareness
