National Construction Day Launched

The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) together with the State President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera successfully launched the inaugural National Construction Day on the 20th of May 2025 which is a historical milestone held under the theme “Quality Driven Construction Industry: Building for Generations.” The event was organized by the Council to celebrate and promote quality infrastructure development across the country.

The event attracted various individuals and entities both local and international, including key players from the construction sector. The President and the Vice President were accompanied on exhibition tour by the NCIC CEO, Eng. Gerald Khonje where they appreciated several innovations and projects taking place in the country.

NCIC Board chairperson, QS. Jeremiah Magaba said the launch of National Construction Day is a celebration of progress toward the realization of Malawi’s Vision 2063, which aspires to create an inclusively wealthy nation with resilient infrastructure. He called on stakeholders to use the day to reflect on key objectives of the construction industry and celebrate the achievements and professionals in the industry. He further shared some of the recent developments in the council such as the creation of the Malawi Infrastructure Management System, construction cost indices, improved service delivery through automation, development of a public information platform for infrastructure transparency and improvements to the regulatory framework through amendments to the NCI Act to strengthen the Council’s mandate. He added by applauding the President for championing the Infrastructure Transparency Initiative (CoST) in the country which has put the construction industry in Malawi on spotlight on global stage.

In his remarks, Hon Jacob Hara, Minister of Transport and Public Works applauded NCIC for organizing the event and stated that it will be an annual event and noted that while such an event should have been held years ago, it is commendable that it has finally begun, thanking NCIC for organizing the event.

Speaking at the event, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera expressed satisfaction with the launch stating that the day will serve as a platform to advocate for durable and safe infrastructure that benefits both the current and future generations.

I am pleased to launch this important day, which is a step forward in realizing the dream of a new Malawi that is fit for all of us and the generations to come.”

The event was spiced up with a drama performance and the traditional Tchopa dance, both themed around construction. A documentary film was also screened, showcasing key infrastructure projects across the country while highlighting major milestones in the sector. The ceremony concluded with the recognition and awarding of outstanding contributors to Malawi’s construction industry.
