The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) has issued a ‘Stop Order‘ on the construction of the the 1,068 meters Tengani Dyke in Nsanje. This follows a monitoring and supervision visit which the Council undertook on the 12th of February after it received reports that the contractor and consultant of the dyke delivered substandard work.
Managed under the Shire River Basin Management Programme (Phase 1) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, a contract was entered into on the 25th of April 2017 between the Government of Malawi, acting through Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, and Mitondo Civil Engineering to execute and complete civil works for the dyke and ancillary works at Tengani, Nsanje. The contract sum is MK288, 240, 778 .53.
Among other things, the Council found that BRL Ingenierie are not registered as consultants in the construction industry hence they were operating illegally as far as the construction industry is concerned. This is in contrary to the Laws of Malawi (Cap. 53:05)
The Council therefore imposed the Stop Order with immediate effect until a duly registered Consultant in the appropriate field is identified and engaged on the project to provide construction supervision services.
