National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) held a 3-day contract management workshop from 11th to 13th November with key players in the construction industry. The aim of the workshop was to equip industry players with essential skills and knowledge to improve contract management practices.

During the opening remarks, NCIC Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Gerald Khonje accentuated the importance of enhancing contract management skills among local contractors.

“We need to develop the construction industry so that players can start contributing significantly to the development of this country. Contract management is one of the factors that contribute to the quality of the products we produce,” said Khonje.

The workshop reflected NCIC’s commitment to empowering local industry players with collective skills to maintain high standards and ensure success of projects.

In order to empower local industry players, the workshop covered the fundamentals of contract management, types of construction contracts and conditions of contract, and provided participants with practical tools for managing contracts throughout their life cycle by discussing payments and claims in construction contracts, breach of contracts and remedies and dispute resolution mechanisms.

Eng. Dr. Rocky Kaunda, one of the facilitators at the workshop urged local contractors to form strategic partnerships to build and gain trust from stakeholders that offer extensive contracts.

“Working together builds trust, enabling stakeholders to offer bigger contracts that contribute to forex returns and foster skills development,” Kaunda said.

Present at the workshop which was held at Crossroads Hotel in Blantyre were Grako Civil Engineering, Kameza Electrical Engineering and DJ Mwadumba Building Contractors just to mention a few.

This was the first in a series of three workshops organized in line with NCIC’s vision for a transformed, sustainable and quality-focused construction industry. Two additional workshops are coming up in Lilongwe and Mzuzu on 25th to 27th November and 2nd to 4th December 2024, respectively.
