Call for Abstracts for the 2020 International Construction Industry Conference (ICC)

NKOPOLA LAKE CONFERENCE CENTRE, MANGOCHI, MALAWI
5th to 7th AUGUST, 2020

The National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) was established by an Act of Parliament in 1996 (Cap 53:05 of the Laws of Malawi) to Regulate, Promote and Develop the construction industry in Malawi. The Council, in collaboration with its stakeholders continue to exert efforts towards creating an ‘Enabling environment for the development and operation of a vibrant, efficient and sustainable Construction Industry through multifaceted collaboration’. The Council envisions a ‘Sustainable and internationally competitive industry’.

The Construction Industry contributes significantly to the social economic development of many countries through provision of products and services that support agriculture, transport, health, education and many other sectors. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 accords infrastructure development prominence in achieving resilient and sustainable economic growth. The Council considers this as an opportunity for the Industry to catalyse the attainment of these goals which will lead into socio-economic development of our country.

In keeping with its vision, mission and goals, NCIC is planning to host the 7th International Construction Conference in August, 2020 in Mangochi. It is envisaged that the conference will provide a platform for stakeholders to share experiences, tease out solutions to challenges facing the Industry and brainstorm on solutions while positioning the Industry in its rightful role in attaining its goals and objectives.
Objective of the International Construction Conference

The International Construction Conference aims at achieving the following objectives:
 To share and take stock of current best practices for construction excellence;
 To adopt resilient and inclusive strategies in infrastructure development;
 To explore ways to enhance collaborative regulation for the industry;
 To consider matters of capacity building, quality and standardization for the industry;
 To consider ways of harnessing the formal and the informal sectors in the industry.

Conference Theme
The theme of the conference is “Sustainable Infrastructure Development – a Catalyst for National Socio-Economic Development”.

Conference Sub-Themes
1. Resilient (sustainable) and inclusive infrastructure
Under this subtheme papers will deal with issues pertaining to sustainability and sustainable approaches to infrastructure development, lean Construction, resilience and recovery and Climate Friendly Technology.

2. Collaborative Regulation of the Industry
Under this sub theme papers will focus on the regulatory framework and collaborative mechanisms for regulation of the Industry and infrastructure development. Roles, responsibilities and initiatives of various institutions will be shared as well as case studies of best practices.

3. Capacity Development
Under this sub theme papers will explore various models of enhancing capacity building in the construction industry including procurement models, targeted procurement and thresholds, sustainable procurement, partnerships, continued professional development and financing models.

4. Quality and Standardization
Under this sub theme papers will explore quality management frameworks and approaches, development and enforcement of standards. Issues of Corruption, Integrity and Transparency and Corporate Governance.

5. Harnessing the Formal and Informal Sectors in Construction
Under this sub theme papers will focus on the collaborative and complementarity nature of the informal and formal sectors being mindful of the informal sector’s contribution and its associated risks and challenges.

Submission of abstracts
All researchers, practitioners, developers and persons engaged in the construction industry are hereby invited to submit papers and insightful case studies on the theme and any of its sub themes for the conference by 29th February, 2020. Please take note that all submissions will undergo a peer review process and the successful ones will be published for the conference.
